What is better for weight loss, swimming or running?

Headed to Maui in 31 days and would like to make the most out of my exercise time from now until then in order to lose the most weight, but I’m not sure if I should spend more time running or swimming?

Monday – Friday I work out at the gym during my hour lunch break from work; however, between drive times to and from the gym, dressing, showering, etc, I’ve only got about 30 good minutes to work out.

Does running or swimming burn more fat? Where should I spend my 30 minutes? Your thoughts and comments on this are appreciated!

Lifting will burn more weight than either of those two combined. Lifting is so efficient, mainly because after you are done lifting, your muscles are rebuilding, thus burning even more calories long after you have stopped working out.

This topic is one of a bit of controversy and there are arguments on both sides of it. I recently read an article that talked about some recent research showing better results from land based exercises as opposed to swimming and the studies authors credited buoyancy as the reason. The idea being when you are on land you need to move your entire body weight while in the water the buoyancy means you need only move a fraction of your weight. I can't right now remember exactly where I read this although I suspect it was the New York Times health section but here is an article that makes a similar claim, http://www.ehow.com/about_5426634_calories-burned-swimming-vs-running.html. Keep in mind this is just one study and I have seen others that concluded swimming is more effective but the reasoning behind this one seems sound to me.
